All About Solar Panel Cleaning

These days solar panels are becoming a more realistic and affordable energy option for homeowners. There is a better understanding of solar energy and its benefits which has more and more people getting solar panels installed in their homes.  When sunlight comes in contact with solar panels, the energy is converted into electricity that can be used as a power source for some or all of your home. This type of energy is sustainable and produces no emissions, rather using solar energy instead of other power sources saves a lot of carbon dioxide being produced into the air. It is a renewable source of energy and can be sourced from anywhere in the world and is highly unlikely to run out. As long as there is the sun and radiation from the sun, there will be solar energy. It can help reduce electricity bills as you can compensate with solar energy. How much you save depends upon the extent of your solar panel system and energy storage.  Solar energy can be used for electricity as well as generating heat. For those areas that don’t have access to the grid, solar panels are an ideal way to get energy. It doesn’t take a lot of maintenance to keep solar panels working. You have to clean them a few times a year and can hire solar panel cleaning services to do the job for you.

Solar panels are placed on roofs and over time dust, leaves and even bird poop may accumulate which can affect the effectiveness of the panels. If you are not going to use solar panel cleaning services and intend on doing the job yourself, here are some tips to help you:

  • If it is possible then clean the panels from the ground. Use a soft brush and a cloth for cleaning purposes. You will also need a hose to clear off the panels.
  • Clean your solar panels on a partially cloudy day otherwise any water that you pour onto them will evaporate quickly and will also smear the dirt. Early morning or evenings are ideal to start cleaning.
  • If the panel is dry, use a brush to take off any loose material before spraying with water.
  • Don’t use sharp metal objects to remove hardened substances this can scratch the glass of the panel and affect its performance but plastic scorers can be used.
  • Avoid using any detergents or abrasive powders for cleaning.
  • If there are any oily stains left during the installation you can remove them using special cleaning alcohol.
  • Don’t use any water pressure items to clean your panels as it can cause damage.
  • Make a habit of doing a monthly inspection of your panels to see if they need cleaning.
  • Lastly if you have any doubts about doing the job, avoid the risk and get a professional.

You can mostly leave it to the rains to clean your solar panels but if there are fluctuations in your energy bill, it could mean that solar panels are getting dirty and are in need of cleaning.
